What is 'A World of Images' about?
This tutorial is about how remote sensing is important nowadays.
It is constructed around a set of selected remote sensing applications to demonstrate the usefulness of different image types
for different purposes from local to global scales.
Each main topic is presented on a one-screen basis where a central image acts as an 'eye-catcher'.
Text is voluntarily kept concise, however a few links allow additional information to be displayed.
The page Help! How to get around in this tutorial? will help you
(and your students) to find informations and navigate in the tutorial.
For which students?
The tutorial and related classroom activities are intented for students from the higher degree of high school (classes 10-12, 16-19 years old students).
It is anticipated that it will be used in a classroom setting. The activities can be completed by
students working either individually or in small groups.
For which disciplines?
This tutorial is interdisciplinary. Its contents can fit in geography, in sciences as well as in English lessons.
What will my students learn through this tutorial?
While navigating through the tutorial, students will:
- Appreciate the beauty of the world as seen from space.
- Discover new places in the world.
- Understand the usefulness of remote sensing in management and maintenance of Earth resources.
- Learn about Earth's resources and diversity, as well as the changes induced by natural and anthropogenic processes.
- Learn about how these processes and the different components of the Earth's surface and atmosphere can be deduced from satellite imagery.
- Understand how these images can be applied to get a better understanding of the dynamic nature of environmental processes as well as
the impact of human activities on the environment.
- Identify concrete applications for remote sensing.
- Be able to recognize/interpret some features in satellite images.
- Be able to describe how remote sensing contributes to monitoring the environment.
How can I use the tutorial with my students?
- You can let the students go through the tutorial at their own rhythm.
- You can ask them to take one of the multiple choice quizzes.
The quizzes were designed to motivate the students to dive in the entire tutorial seeking for answers.
- You can have them make presentations about one of the main topics presented (see the contents page).
They can do some more research on the selected topic.
- You can have them choose an image from the mosaic. After having read the attached information, they can present and explain the image to the class.
- You can use one of the lessons/worksheets listed in the teacher's corner.
Activities are presented in a recommended order. First listed are lesson plans and worksheets to be used directly with the tutorial 'A World of Images'.
Then you will find a list of class activities designed to learn about Earth observation and introduce remote sensing.
Finally, teaching material about other topics depicted in the tutorial 'A World of Images', i.e. global warming, are detailed.
Is there any prerequisite knowledge needed?
No.
