Constructing a Frequency Distribution Graph
Subjects:
All subjectsObjectives:
In this exercise you will learn
- How to import data into Excel 97 spreadsheet software
- How to create a graph from the data
- How to create a frequency distribution from a data set
Prerequisite:
Materials:
- Spreadsheet software, where Excel 97 is used in this example
- Textfile with data: datafile_dice.txt
Time needed:
20 - 40 minutes, depending on your previous knowledge in working with Excel
Procedure:
- Save the text file with data (datafile_dice.txt) to your computer
- Open Excel
- Import the text file (Never done this before? - Follow this link: How to import text files into Excel)
You should now have 30 values in the data file down column A, from cell 1 to cell 30.
- Once you have created a spreadsheet in Excel, create a graph of the data. Never done this?
Highlight the data and then click on the Graph symbol to initiate the Graph Wizard.
Choose Column, click Next, Next, Next, Finish so as to display the graph of the data.
- Create a Frequency Distribution of this data. (Never done this? Find out in the tutorial
To construct a Frequency Distribution in Excel
- Plot this Frequency Distribution.
- Save the Spreadsheet as a spreadsheet file for use in future exercises.
- Answer the following questions
- How many peaks does your data have?
- How is the data distributed?
- What is the range of values relative to their relative proportions?
- How many peaks does your data have?
