Increase of World Population
- In 2000, the world's population reached 6.1 billion, and is growing at an annual rate of 1.2%, or 77 million people per year.
- In 1950, 68% of the world's population was in developing countries, with 8% in least developed countries.
- By 2030, it is expected that 85% of the world's population will be in developing countries, with 15% in LDCs.
- The other side of the coin is that the percentage of the world's population that lives in developed countries is declining, from 32% in 1950 to an expected 15% in 2030.
- By 2050, the number of persons older than 60 years will more than triple, from 606 million today to nearly 2 billion. The number of persons over 80 years of age will increase even more, from 69 million in 2000 to 379 million in 2050, more than a five-fold increase (UN-HABITAT 2001).
