Experimental setups

The experimental examination of the scattering matrix elements requires a light source emitting a collimated beam as well as linear polarisers and λ/4-retarders

as well as a photodetector D =( 1 1 0 0 ) with a narrow detection angle for measuring the intensities of the scattering light at defined scattering angles.

 

The elements a 11 , a 12 , a 21 and a 22 respectively i 1 and i 2 can be directly measured; multiplying them with the Stokes-Parameters I y and I z results in the parameters I y ' and I z ' measured by the detector.

All other elements of the scattering matrix are only partually incorporated in the directly measurable intensities and would have to be calculated from data of several measurements if desired to be displayed as individual quantities.
